Tech Group Brings Flexible Automation to Insert Molding

Over the past four years The Tech Group has been involved with a number of insert molding applications. In order to utilize standard injection molding presses, the Tech Group has traditionally used top entry robots to accurately load and unload components. In fact, when larger parts require insert molding it is often considered the most cost effective technique.

Although we can insert mold smaller, higher volume components using a horizontal press, the preferred method is to use a vertical press with rotary action. The advantages include an unobstructed path for loading and unloading, the use of gravity to assist with insertion, and uninterrupted cycle times during the loading process. The major disadvantage is that vertical presses are quite specialized. Because of this it is difficult to justify the purchase of such a machine for one application only. Further, should that application not meet expectations, then the cost of unused capacity has to be absorbed.

The Tech Group's answer to this market is implementing a standardized vertical machine platform, combined with flexible, five-axis robots for loading and unloading components. With one cell operational and two more cells ramping, The Tech Group is well positioned to offer value added solutions for the most demanding insert molding applications.

How does The Tech Group automate the process effectively?

Standardize on one size vertical machine, and adjust cavitation accordingly. This insures cost containment through high press utilization. It is more cost effective to use a larger press then necessary, than to buy a smaller press specifically for one application.Consolidation of parts, if applicable

Standardize on the most flexible piece of automation, and position it identically on every machine.

Design for quick change end of arm tooling, and quick change component presentation.

Design the mold for robotic presentation with consistent layout regardless of the part's configuration.

Focus all of Tech Group's insert molding requirements in one manufacturing facility. This enhances manufacturing expertise, increases manufacturing flexibility and increases machine utilization.

By following these guidelines we can offer the most attractive solution for automating the insert molding process. Further, because we have developmental insert molding machines, we have the ability to prove out the process and help our customers with design and prototyping. The end result is that The Tech Group can leverage its customer base and market exposure to provide a less capital intensive method for automated insert molding.
